Big BrotherLONDON: The last series, aired earlier this year, sparked nearly 45,000 complaints from viewers as well as furious protests in India after Shetty was insulted by fellow contestants.

Shetty’s profile in Britain has soared since she went on to win. Senior executives at Channel 4 said that the decision not to air the highly popular show in 2008 was taken as part of a wider shake-up to make room for new programmes. They made no mention of the scandal in announcing their decision. Read the rest of this entry »

TintinNEW YORK: The company’s British stores yanked copies of the controversial book last week after Britain’s Commission for Racial Equality described the book as containing “imagery and words of hideous racial prejudice.”

“With respect to the specific title ‘Tintin in the Congo,’ which could be considered offensive by some of our customers, we have decided to place this title in a section of our store intended primarily for adults — the Graphic Novels section,” the US arm of Borders said in a statement.

“We believe adults have the capacity to evaluate this work within historical context and make their own decision whether to read it or not. Other ‘Tintin’ titles will remain in the children’s section,” it said. Read the rest of this entry »

Harry PotterLondon: With the release date for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” a week away, speculations are mounting on what will be in store for boy wizard Harry Potter.

And bets are pouring heavily in on Harry killing himself in the final book of JK Rowling’s series.

Bookies William Hill have cut the price on Harry sacrificing himself from an immense 33-1 to odds on, fearing that fans with inside information of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are scheming a second huge sting.

Bookies were washed out after the release of The Half-Blood Prince in 2005, when clued-up supporters backed headmaster Dumbledore to die. “The idea has gained momentum with fans. They expect for good to triumph over evil Harry will have to cause his own death,” The Sun quoted William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams, as saying. Read the rest of this entry »

Manhunt 2NEW YORK: “Take-Two Interactive Software has temporarily suspended plans to distribute Manhunt 2 for the Wii or PlayStation platforms while it reviews its options,” the company said in a statement late Thursday.

Just weeks before the scheduled European launch of “Manhunt 2,” Britain, Ireland and Italy have all banned the savage computer game, maintaining it encourages “violence and murder.”

Made for PS2 and Nintendo Wii consoles by Rockstar Games Inc, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive Software, the game was set to go on sale in Europe from mid-July.

It is a sequel to “Manhunt,” which was also sharply criticized for its violent content. On Tuesday the game became the first to be banned by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in 10 years, following a similar decision by the Irish Film Censor’s Office (IFCO). New Cambodian museum to show lost BuddhasTOKYO: The Japanese-led research team found the statues in 2001 some six kilometres (four miles) from Angkor Wat, the former capital of the powerful Khmer empire and emblem of Cambodian identity.

The statues will go on display in November in the new two-storey Preah Norodom Sihanouk Museum, named after Cambodia’s former king, team leader Yoshiaki Ishizawa said.

“By exhibiting the Buddhist statues, I hope the museum will be able to complement what is lacking in Angkor Wat and that is to offer idols dating from ancient times,” said Ishizawa, who is also president of Tokyo’s Sophia University. The statues, crafted between the 11th and 13th centuries and some as tall as 1.2 metres, were buried underground after the apparent destruction of a temple. Read the rest of this entry »

A statue depicting Harry PotterLONDON: “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the first in the series about the young wizard, will be sold by the auction house Bonhams.

Between 500 and 1,000 copies of the first edition of that novel were published in 1997, signalling the beginning of one of the biggest successes in publishing history.

Since that initial publication, the Harry Potter series of books have sold a combined 325 million copies around the world in 64 languages, and have formed the basis for five hit films.

Previous first editions of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” have fetched more than 10,000 pounds at other sales.

The auction is set to take place less than a month before the seventh and final edition in the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” goes on sale on July 21.

Tintin and his dog SnoweySYDNEY: But Moulinsart, which manages the estate of the character’s late creator Herge, has barred The Australian’s cartoonist Bill Leak from commercialising his efforts by selling copies to the public.

Leak has been using Tintin’s likeness for months to portray Australia’s round-faced opposition leader Kevin Rudd and has vowed to continue to do so despite complaints from Moulinsart that he was parodying the Belgian figure.

Moulinsart has since revised its stance to say that the image can be used in political cartoons, The Australian reported Monday.

“We have no problem with him (Leak) using Tintin as a parody in his cartoons in the newspaper but when he starts selling them to the public then it becomes more commercial and he is infringing copyright,” the firm’s representative Mark Rodwell said. “He is not permitted to make those sales so we want him to stop doing that and to compensate us for any past sales.” Read the rest of this entry »
