By: Carly O’keefeDONGOLA, Il. –Six Dongola 7th graders are in trouble after posting obscene video on Myspace. The youths made a video in class revealing a boy’s genitalia and girl’s body parts. It has shocked parents and administrators–and has folks fearing who else may have watched or even downloaded the video.

“I hadn’t even been on Myspace. I had to have help getting there,” said Dongola Schools Superintendent Nancy Dillow.

Once Dillow found the video clip, she couldn’t believe what she saw.

“I was shocked, it was taken in a classroom, not in a location where there’s low traffic it was in a classroom, and we’re going to look into that further,” said Dillow.

Greg Samples has a 7th grade son who was in the classroom when the video was shot. He wasn’t involved in any way, but Samples says he has concerns as to how a substitute teacher didn’t notice anything going on.

“The kids were being kids, playing pranks. It’s how they were allowed the chance to do it; that falls on the adults, not the kids,” said Samples.

Parents and administrators also worry what else is posted on the web, and know–they may never find out.

“Adults have a lot of catching up to do. Kids are just so advanced,” said Samples.

While the students are in trouble in terms of disciplinary action now, administrators also want to have a talk with the kids to keep them out of trouble on the internet in the future.

“We are going to meet with the students, seventh and eighth graders and maybe do a bit of talking about what the web really is. You’re not just putting things up there for your friends to see, you’re putting it up there for anybody to see, and in this day in age, that’s an invitation for trouble,” said Dillow.

The six students were given anywhere from after-school detentions to five days suspension, depending on how involved they were in making and posting the obscene video on Myspace.

If by now you have not heard of Mspace or Friendster then maybe the world is moving too slowly for you. Young adults (teens and college age adults) are using the world of the internet to communicate in ways we had no inkling of a few years ago.

Social networking is booming as young adults find one another online to chat, post comments, post photos, and share info about the latest happenings in their world to their Myspace pages and Friendster networking sites. It is not always a good thing for sure, but more on that later on.

So how does it work? Well some genius thought up the concept of Myspace, which is basically a free bulletin board for anyone (not just teens) to create a web site that is all about networking and communicating with friends and creating new friends too. Users create a free account, enter information about themselves, in as much or little detail as they want. They then share their site with their friends. Their friends can then post comments on the myspace. It becomes a great big bulletin board of social interaction. The kids are glued to these things and seem to know how to find one another and chase down the latest hot info in a heartbeat.

So what does this mean to communication in the Internet age for teens and young adults? It puts a fancier face on the outpouring of information exchange between teens.

It used to be that only the geeky teens had web pages about themselves. They were the only ones who knew how to build them. Now with these easy to use tools at their disposal every teen or young adult can have a site. That means connections and networking spreads very fast.

The sharing aspect of these sites are not only their good side but also their bad side as well. In the last year many schools and parents have become alarmed at the content of some of these Myspace sites that students have built. In typical teen fashion some kids say on their site what probably should not be said in public. They post as though it were a diary and then it gets spread around. That means that hate and meanness spread within the community quickly. Some schools have cracked down and told students they would be expelled if they do not clean up their sites. Parents, just finding out about the technology and checking it out for the first time become alarmed at the things that are said on these postings.

Of course that aspect comes back to the old thing of parents needing to be in tune with their kids and what is going on in their world. You cannot give a kid a computer and internet access and then walk away and not pay any attention.

The other thing that has raised alarm in this world of social networking is kids will post news of a party in their area, to their site. Instead of getting to “just” their friends it ends up spreading to the whole area. Homes have been overrun by crowds of kids trying to attend parties. One such event even ended with a fatal stabbing when the crowd got to big and unruly.

Now these are the type of things that can happen with or without such social networking sites in teens lives. These sites are not going to fade away. Myspace has over 60 million subscribers and was recently bought by a major corporation. They intend to make a lot of money off these sites for years to come. After all it is a very juicy target market for advertising revenue.

Myspace Surveys: Giving You The Full Picture

By: Gabriel Adams

The Myspace web site is one of the most popular web sites on the Internet. Millions of people and businesses have created a web site on Myspace for a variety of reasons. Some of the people are trying to get more business, some of the people are sharing their lives with their friends, some of the people are trying to find that special someone, and some of the people are on Myspace just because it is the thing to do right now. No matter the reason for being on Myspace, everyone is trying to add something special to their page to allow them to stand out more than someone else.

I have seen some pages that have a short biography of the person that just barely scratches the surface as to what kind of person that page represents. I have also seen some interesting stories on people’s web sites that give you a little bit better insight into that person’s life. Still other people will post pictures of themselves or their friends, so that you can see them in action. A few other people will post videos of themselves that show them hanging out, or performing at something they can do well. On many people’s pages there are also comments from their friends, which give you even further insight into their lives.

Even though all of the features listed above can allow you to try to get to know someone on Myspace, they still do not give you a full picture. However a new trend I have seen developing further lately is the use of surveys to supply a lot of information at one time. I searched online to look at some of the different surveys that were created for Myspace, and I found quite a few. Many of these surveys were around forty to fifty questions which ranged from favorite color to the wildest thing that I have ever done. A survey can be a great way to give a wide range of information about oneself in a very short, compact way.
