The phone claims to offer free calls and instant text messages via an Internet connection. The Skypephone comes for less than 50 pounds and will operate both as a conventional 3G mobile phone and a VOIP - Voice Over the Internet Protocol - handset. The 3G handset will have the usual voice calls, Internet roaming, email and video downloads, which will use the conventional mast system. Separately, it will have a Skype button that will direct calls via a mast into the Internet telephony system of cables and satellite dishes, which is much cheaper to use. Much of Google’s financial success has been due to the rapid growth in online advertising at the expense of traditional media, and now the Internet search giant is seeking ways to extend its dominance of Internet advertising to the mobile phone market. According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Google is fashioning a mobile phone operating system that it wants service providers and manufacturers to install in their handsets.
